I’m just a nobody in the company.

I’m always surprised and disgusted to hear this from others. What precedes or follows the statement is often something along the lines of the below.

‘I’m not going to speak to the boss (about something)/volunteer to do the task/do more because I’m only paid so much…’

Sometimes, it’s well justified because I know how some companies undermine the value of her employees. You can’t blame the staff for being defensive and belligerent in these cases.

There are times, though, when people take on this kind of stance without rhyme or reason (other than bad experience in a previous company, maybe), and I can’t say that I approve (not that anyone needs my approval, of course). The attitude just smacks of passiveness and irresponsibility.

If you’re the one working on the ground level or the front line or in the thick of the battle or whatever you want to call it, you definitely have valuable input to help the company improve. If your boss is, very unfortunately, not the hands-on kind of person, he/she is not going to see the problem or the solution from the office if you don’t report your experiences on-site. There is, of course, the possibility of problems being ignored despite repeated reports, but if you don’t even try to bring his/her attention to the problem, it’s just self-defeating and irresponsible.

That said, I don’t believe in bosses sitting high up there without a clue to what’s going on in the field. Respect has never been earned from being ignorant and sheltered. I’d never call someone my boss just because of the title the person holds. I’d call the person by his/her name, even put a ‘Mister’ or a ‘Ms.’ in front as a sign of basic courtesy, but I’d gag on my own saliva before I call someone I don’t respect ‘boss’.

Going back to the subordinate-side of matters, I don’t mean that you should go all high-profile and be a smart-mouthed know-it-all, but if you’re going to think that you’re a ‘nobody’, then don’t expect others to treat you otherwise. Talking to or even giving attention to ‘nobody’ in the room is not what we consider normal behaviour after all.

My stance? I’m a hard-nosed b**** of a boss; if you’re going to save your effort in your work, then I’m going to save my effort in keeping you on the payroll.
