Everybody has different priorities in life.
But when you’re charged with managing or leading others, it’s imperative that you think about the welfare and development of your staff. Why? Because staff who have knowledge and skills that are relevant to the times, who enjoy good working relationships with their colleagues, who are motivated and find their work fulfilling, are more productive and will bring the company to a higher pinnacle. Those are pragmatic reasons…purely for the company to reap financial rewards.
I too have a very pragmatic side, but if you really want me to cut to (what I think is) the core of the issue, it’s really because you’re in a position where you can actually, damn it, do something to make things better for the people working in positions beneath yours…you can choose to oppress and repress, or to groom and nurture.
I can accept vested interests, because no human being is ever entirely objective and selfless. What I can’t accept, is the win-lose mindset, all the time. And to top it off, to hide the self-serving motives beneath a veneer of goodwill!
That crown might have been placed on your head by others, but if you choose to continue wearing it, strive to be someone worthy of that trust and bear the weight of the crown as best as you can. If not, step down, relinquish that power and all the entitlement that comes with it, and let others willing to shoulder that mantle of responsibility step up.
