Owls were revered and seen as symbols of wisdom in ancient Greece.

Today, many western countries similarly associates them with wisdom.

In contrast, they are feared and considered to be harbingers of death and ill health by many Native American cultures and in regions such as East Africa and the Middle East, even today.

Some have ventured to claim that death as symbolised by the owl could mean literal death, but could also include the ending of an event or a phase in your life. From such endings sprout new beginnings, and seeing an owl or hearing its hoot could signal new beginnings and hope.

I’m not superstitious, but the huge unblinking gaze of owls and the renowned ability of some species to fly almost silently make it easy to imagine that they do indeed know something that we lowly mortals don’t.
